In business, we celebrate the "leap of faith."

At the Elevate 2026 conference last week, the energy was high and the theme was "Show Up Scared."

But as a Leadership Advisor and Fractional Integrator, I know that while fear gets you started, predictability is what keeps you in business.

The math is brutal. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 20% of businesses fail in their first year. By year five, that number jumps to 50%.

Most of these failures aren't due to a lack of talent. They happen because the "back of the house", the leadership alignment and operational foundation; is anything but predictable.

I recently moderated a powerhouse panel of Commercial Real Estate (CRE) experts. While I don’t work in the CRE space, the leadership parallels were impossible to ignore.

Whether you are signing a 10-year lease or building a high-performance team, the risks of "not knowing what you don't know" are identical.

I’ve lived this. My husband and I have owned our barbershop in Oakland Park, FL, for 15 years. Looking back at our very first lease agreement, I realize we had the drive, but we lacked a streamlined process for vetting the "unknowns."

We were operating on hope, and hope is not a predictable leadership strategy.

3 Actionable Steps to Streamline Your Leadership Foundation:
  1. Audit Your Team "Unknowns": Just as a tenant fails to consider hidden costs, many leaders fail to identify the "hidden" gaps in their team’s communication. If you don’t have a streamlined process for alignment, your culture is left to chance.

  2. Build a Cohesive Advisory Team: Your internal leadership and your external partners must speak the same language. A cohesive team doesn't just work together, they anticipate risks before they become "scary" realities.

  3. Set Predictable Standards: What should you expect from your team? A predictable organization has clear, non-negotiable standards(values that you live by). If your leadership structure isn’t providing a streamlined path to growth, it’s time to re-evaluate the foundation.

The Takeaway: Passion gets you through the door, but a cohesive leadership foundation is what keeps the lights on for 15 years and beyond.
